Unknown Crushes

Do me a favor.

Think of all the people you have ever had a crush on, no matter how minuscule the crush.

The jock you sat next to in Math. The quiet kid in Science and Homeroom. The cute barista at Starbucks.

With every face, every name, a small moment you shared comes to mind.

When he admired the doodle in your notebook. When he spent the last few seconds before the starting bell rang to ask about your day. When he finally spelled your name right on your cup of coffee.

The crushes, they never amounted to much. You knew that it lacked any real potential of becoming true love. By now, you’ve forgotten his name, the color of his eyes, the topics you discussed.

But you remember the way his eyes crinkled when he smiled. You remember the tingle in your arm when his hand accidentally brushed against your skin. You remember how his laugh carried across a room, the sound loud and pure.

And you remember how it felt to be noticed by him. It’s easy to recall the pure joy rising in your chest by his simply walking into the room.

You treasure the butterflies in your stomach when he looked your way. You cherish the slight smile on his face after you shared a laugh. You hold on to that feeling of puppy love; the “crush” before it became “crushed.”

All of this, you remember.

All of these feelings lie safely tucked away in your memory.

And he doesn’t even know. He hasn’t a clue that you ever felt anything for him.

Now, imagine all the people who’s day you’ve made, simply because they had a small crush on you.

Because, I guarantee you, someone has.

And you didn’t even know it.

And that’s something to be proud of.
